Little Mermaid Statue turns 100

Happy birthday l00 little mermaid.
One of Denmark's most famous spots turns 100. Sitting on the harbor of Langelinie promenade. Finished and unveiled on August 23, 1913, she looks sad and as if she waiting for someone she knows may never return to her. It truly fits the original Little Mermaid story. As original story did not have the happy Disney ending we have all grown accustomed to. It ended sadly for Hans Christian's mermaid. She lost all and died of a broken heart. I though would like to think that this mermaid will find her happy ending.

For those lucky enough to be able to see this beauty:

The Wem Fire Apparition, 1995

This famous photo of a young girl looking out from a raging fire was taken during a 1995 structure fire at Wem town hall in Shropshire, England. Shot from across the street by a local photographer, nothing unusual was seen at the time but once the negative was developed he noticed what appeared to be a young girl standing in the doorway of the burning building. Firemen found the photo so disturbing that they sifted through the ashes afterwards searching for the remains of a body but found nothing, leaving everyone wondering who the girl may have been. Not surprisingly, there is a bit of local folklore which claims that a young girl named Jane Churm accidentally burned the town hall to the ground in 1677 when she dropped a candle…

Lindsay as Liz?

To me, Elizabeth Taylor was one of the most iconic beauties that ever was. So when I heard Lindsay Lohan would be playing her, I was horrified. I am not saying Lindsay is a bad actress. On the contrary I think she has real talent. A talent that is often overshadowed by her personal issues. Seeing the pics, I will say this is the most beautiful I have ever seen Lindsay. But that being said, she lacks Liz's curves. Watching this preview, If this had been about anyone else I would be saying she nailed it. But as this is Liz still not sure.

Oz: the great and powerful

A prequel to Wizard of Oz is coming out this spring. This version is mainly about the wizard and the witches and how the became the people we know them as. The Wizard arriving to Oz as Dorothy did, through a tornado. There he meets the three witch sisters of OZ.

It should be exciting to see how Mila's character is turned from the beauty in the big red hat to the evil and very green wicked witch of the west.

New Sleeping Beauty-Maleficent

Now I am generally not a big Angelina Jolie fan. But one of her upcoming film I am going to have to see. She is going to star in the newest version of Sleeping Beauty. This version should be very different than most versions of Fairy tales retold. This one is going to be told from the point of view of the evil fairy Maleficent.

The movie also stars India Eisley as the young Maleficent, so the movie should be give us good background in the history of dark fairy.

The movie Maleficent isn't set to be out till March 2014 so we do have a bit of a wait for it.

Happy Flag Day

Now I know there is great debate on whether or not Betsy Ross was the first to sew the Star Spangled Banner. But as she is an ancestor of mine, I feel the need to commend her. Whether she did or she didn't. She is someone to be admired. She was a business women, a seamstress, a patriot, and a strong women in a time when women were not allowed to be only what others allowed them to be. But being a seamstress and a patriot, she did sew American flags, just not the first. This story was started by her grandson in 1870 and just kind of stuck.

But even though she didn't create the first one, she has every right to be remember. For if it wasn't for patriotic women of the past and most certainly of her time, we would not have the freedoms we have today. So for my fellow Americans, it does not matter what your politics are or really what you think of how things going are today. In America we have freedoms many do not have and it is for women like Betsy Ross that we owe thanks for these freedoms.

For those interested, you can still visit Betsy's House.  Its located on 239 Arch Street in Philadelphia PA.
